So to update this blog, in the past few months I have been diligently searching for a new job. GreenPlanetSearch is doing well, so I thought I would expand my horizons and look for other things to accomplish. My school came across an individual who needed some work done for his insurance site. They passed on the information to me and I called and spoke with this man. As it turns out, he was an insurance salesman looking for a web presence. He was an older guy and wanted to have a website that senior citizens could use easily. I came up with a few ideas and he liked it and we went from there. Upon completion of the site, he approved and gave me a check for the remaining half of payment. He post dated this check and I did not find out until later on that evening I went to cash it. So I thought to myself, “ehh, not a big deal. Now I have something to look forward to tomorrow.” I go to his bank and try to cash the check only to find out he had placed a stop payment on the check. I called him 12 times only to have his voicemail come on and no answer despite the messages I left. Then after about an hour, he called from a blocked number and left a message. Turns out, instead of giving the site to a professional service for hosting, he gave it to an individual to put up live online. I spent three hours with this man going through the site and he approved everything, and wrote me the check because he approved everything. So now I am not only not getting the credit I deserve, because after he handed the site to the individual, it did not work correctly, he also is incommunicado and won’t pay me what he owes me. For another slap in the face, he finally spoke to me on the phone saying that the site I had made did not function after it went online, and yet he still let the site remain up for weeks before making only very slight changes to this. If anyone has any ideas on what legal actions I can take with him, please let me know. I thought I had a contract with him because I sent him a requested email stating the terms and actions along with payment information. Maybe it was just my fault for that and if so I can’t cry over spilled milk forever, but now I have a policy where I do not do any work whatsoever until I have half of the money for the job and a signed contract. Its a shame people do this in these days when this whole field is being raped by major corporations who offer pre-built templates and are doing what Wal-Mart is doing to their competitors and local businesses. Either way, we will adapt to it and make ourselves still highly valuable in the job market. The moral of the story is, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have a contract with a client, no matter how big or small the contract may be. I am not even out of college yet and I have been slammed twice already. Lesson learned.

Yes. Its coming. Alot sooner than you think. The world’s first 100% “Green” search engine is well on its way to launching in early October. GreenPlanetSearch.com is already gaining momentum as it nabs awards for design and for environmental friendliness. Based out of sunny Miami Beach, GreenPlanetSearch.com (or GPS) for short, is also one of the only Flash based search engines if not the only.

Gray accents highlight the lime green tones of the main page of the beta site. With an option to make the screen full-size, and a “Green” lesson plan in AS 3.0 (which apparently yours truly is going to encode) for grade school students, a fast growing community of industrial professionals, celebrity endorsements (Grant Show is on the main page of the beta site) this is shaping up to be truly an amazing experience. GPS’s Alexa rating continue to rise despte not even being officially launched yet.

We here at GPS have been burning the midnight oil so to speak ensuring it all works, examining the ins and outs of everything up so far and picking up random awesome people along the way. Mike (the boss) always appears relaxed and ready for work despite him being in the office until 4 in the morning typically. There is a sense of nonchalance in the air, as if nobody is in a ruch for anything, yet there is also an atmospheric sense of excitement all of us hang on to. Its as if everyone knows what is about to happen, and everyone can’t wait for launch.

PR releases are being written. Events are being planned. Everyone is busy, and I’m here blogging and codeing simultaneously lol. Everyone here is a bonafide workhorse. There is no definition to the word “can’t” here because it’s a word we never use. It’s quite amazing to be part of something so out of the blue and yet so meaningful.

Techincal writing is a major facet of nearly every industry today, and of course what better way to write than digital blog content right? Well, my Professor has asked that my class and I write about our experiences and what we learned in such a class. First things first though, technical writing can make alot of money as well as garner lots of attention on the web. Seeing as our major is Interactive Media Design, this class makes us able to write the white papers and marketing white papers associated with projects and tasks assigned to us, in addition to coming to a more defined understanding of what it means to be in our field.

White papers, as demanding of time as they may seem, serve to inform the reader(s) of new and upcoming technologies that may be implemented in a project one of us could be contracted out to do. The OWL @ Purdue has this to say on the subject:

“Typically, the purpose of a white paper is to advocate that a certain position is the best way to go or that a certain solution is best for a particular problem. When it is used for commercial purposes, it could influence the decision-making processes of current and prospective customers.” (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/546/01/)

As a class we also learned about translating such content as these white papers into easily digestible web content to be viewed by the masses. The purposes of this are clearly described in Cynthia Sadler’s blog:

“Rather than just being on the receiving end of information, it is important for technical people to contribute to the blogosphere. Are you excited about a new technology? Spread the love. Did you discover a new technique? You should share with the rest of the world. Did you spend hours troubleshooting a problem? You should write it down to save yourself (and others) the pain the next time that occurs. And for these reasons (and there are many more), if you are the type reading this blog, then you should have your own blog or contribute to a team blog.” (http://www.phurnace.com/blog/on-the-importance-of-blogging-for-technical-folks-2.html)

In addition, we discovered that the greatest way to get your name out in the field en mass, is to take a report we did in class (ours was on New Media Solutions, mine can be viewed here http://namiuo.wordpress.com/2008/09/08/dailymotionugcdailymotionugc) and convert it into a blog. Who knows? Someone may check out our blog and wish to hire us based on our intelligible blogs.

Basically the whole point of the class appeared to be breaking down content into chunks that are easily digested by general public, and posting these tidbits of information in a resentable manner online in order ot be best viewed by as many people as possible at all times. In addition, I would like to add that, not only is it more easily syndicated, it is also alot more ec-friendly than printing out a million copies on paper and using a million envelopes and stamps to send it all out.

-Jonathan Whetsell (http://www.greenplanetsearch.com)<—– check it out!!!!

Dailymotion – The Alternative for UGC

Currently listed as number fifty one in overall traffic Dailymotion is one of the most popular user-generated content sites on the internet in the United States, and tops most others in European countries such as France as well as Japan, ranking at number eight and fifty-eight respectively. Despite ranking as low as number 85 in traffic in the United States, the site retains 15.5% of its page viewers from the U.S. out of a total of nearly 3 million visitors per day.

A video hosting service provider on the web, Dailymotion is based in Paris, France- the same country it gets most of its traffic from. Having registered it’s domain name only 1 month before YouTube, Dailymotion has garnered it’s fair share of the market of User Generated Content (UGC) sites, without imposing a monopoly. Having spread its self over a wide area in terms of marketing, Dailymotion is only blocked in three countries- Tunisia, China, and Turkey. What makes it even better, is unlike most other UGC sites who don’t care about major lawsuits that could bankrupt a company- YouTube, Yahoo!, Google, MySpace etc. – Dailymotion supports the new rules pertaining to anti-piracy.

Dailymotion’s involvement in the anti-piracy acts came about during a recent lawsuit involving a film producer in Paris, France who claimed Dailymotion hosted a version of his film “Joyeux Noel”. Dailymotion was ordered by a court in Paris to do something about its policies and also was fined. Recognizing the need not to fall to its knees in bankruptcy, Dailymotion along with a few other companies came together to create and form “User Generated Content Principles” . These agreements if adopted by lawmakers would impose strict regulations on UGC. Coincidentally, nearly all the major U.S. UGC sites failed to appear and since have still made no attempt to come up with similar ideals of their own. Interesting enough, Microsoft in an effort not to be dragged through the mud again was also part of the panel who made the Principles.

Dailymotion also was one of the first UGC sites to make an iPhone specific “companion” site, wherein iPhone users may still access online and available content to a certain degree. This in turn will boost daily visits and page views making it even more popular than it already is. Making sites even more accessible has been the norm for most popular sites as of late, and teaming with Apple to cater to a widely popular phone, Dailymotion has made its self available all around the world from anywhere.

Users can upload content at a higher resolution and size than most other UGC sites, allowing a resolution of 640×480 or 1280×720. Audio on Dailymotion videos are encoded as MP3 at 96 kbit/s in stereo compared to YouTube’s maximum 480×360 and mono sound. Also implementing a members service wherein registered users called MotionMakers have no resrtictions on file size or time limit. This is policed by Dailymotion’s Audible Magic digital sound fingerprinting system it recently implemented. Also, Dailymotion can stream HD video content as well, eventhough it is honest in stating that the quality is not what would be accepted as HD (still higher than standard definition however), further giving users with only HD content to post, the opportunity to post their content.

As of January 2008, Dailymotion was getting 16,000 new videos posted per day, with more than twenty-six million page views per diem.
